Book Reports

Here are some book report forms that you may find interesting for your students to use. Please modify them to suit your class’ needs.

A discussion of the elements of a story (setting, character, plot) is necessary before attempting to ask our students to submit a book report of any kind.

Children love to draw, so let them draw first before you ask them to write about each of the elements of the story. You would be surprised how fast they do this activity. Reward their effort by displaying their colorful work on your bulletin board. They will make a good display.

This is another simple book report that children in the lower grades would love to do.

Story Map Outline

Helping your students map outline a story first before asking them to write a formal book report would help them get the flow of the story in their mind. This would take a lot of pressure from writing a good book report if they can see it in front of them in a short summary form what they need to write on.
The elements that the teacher may consider important fort eh students to focus on when working on their map outline of the story are:

SETTING, CHARACTERS, PROBLEMS, AND SOLUTION

The mapping of a story could be made clearer if they are drawn on a table – with four boxes within to contain each element and enough room for the students to fill in their responses.

Characterization

The following is a form that may be used for many book reports that a student will be working for the entire year, and it focuses simply on listing characters that he/she chose. This form could be modified to include other elements such as the relation of the character chosen with other characters in the story.

The teacher may want to use this form to make a summary of all the stories they have read for a certain period of time to review the students of their favorite characters.

The following items to be identified in a story are: Title, Character, and Characteristics of Each Character. Again, this should appear in a kind of table, with the items on top of each table.

Beginning, Middle, and Ending Parts

A Simple Book Report for the primary level is for the students to identify the beginning, middle, and the ending of a given story using the teacher’s required sentences for a summary. The children may accompany each part with a drawing which they love very much to do, and able to express themselves better. I have them submit the book report in an album form, one page for each part. These book reports with a nicely drawn cover will be good for display around the classroom.
